Opportunities: Bilingual? Care About Human Trafficking Victims? Then Volunteer With BPSOS!

May 11, 2009: Do you want to make a difference? The Victims of Exploitation and Trafficking Assistance (VETA) program of BPSOS is looking for volunteer interpreters to help communicate with clients.

Your language skills, even if you are not fluent, could make a huge difference in the life of a victim of human trafficking – even over the phone. Some of our clients have been able to learn English, attend college, and find meaningful employment. Now your help is needed to give others hope!

Current interpretation skills needed: Amharic, Thai, Indonesian

We would also welcome contact from people able to share their skills in Spanish, as well as Vietnamese, Korean, and other Asian languages.

The VETA program assists victims of labor trafficking in the Washington metropolitan area with case management needs. Human trafficking is a human rights violation and some of our clients may have experienced inhumane work conditions or violence. Although this can be a traumatic experience, the VETA program focuses on the present how to help these survivors rebuild their lives and their families here in the DC area. Most of our clients have had very little interaction with the community around them. Some speak very little English and may be hesitant to access resources that are available to them. Some have to be taught how to use the public transportation system, go to the grocery store or access the school system for their children. VETA case managers work with the clients to help empower them to achieve their goals.

To be specific, BSOS is looking for volunteer interpreters to assist the case manager. Most interpretation can be done over the phone and at the convenience of the volunteer, although being able to come to our office in Falls Church is a plus. We also need assistance with document translation.

Requirements: Although no formal certification in interpretation is needed, volunteers should be professional and respectful to clients.
