Background: Data Show Extent of Trafficking of Vietnamese to the US

minn-pie-chartJanuary 15, 2009: Note the strikingly high percentage of Vietnamese victims of human trafficking displayed on this chart.

The chart presents the countries of origin of 241 victims who were trafficked to Minnesota between April 1, 2005 and June 30, 2008, as reported to Civil Society, an organization devoted to helping people affected by crime by providing comprehensive crime victim services.

The US government estimates that approximately 20,000 foreign nationals are trafficked into the US each year, and according to Civil Society, Minnesota has become one of the 13 most heavily sex and slavery trafficked states in the nation. Minnesota is particularly affected by trafficking because it is a border state.
