Key Briefs & Reports: Terms Set for Settlement of Winbond Case

December 15, 2008: Working with local CAMSA staff and nonprofit partners, BPSOS’ executive director, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thang, met on December 9 with representatives of the Malaysian firm Winbond to set forth the terms for a settlement for four of the company’s “ô-sin” (domestic) Vietnamese guest workers. Under the terms, Winbond would have to:

– Return all the confiscated personal belongings of the four domestics, including cell phones, passports, and pocket money

– Pay all back wages

Tell the agents of the Vietnamese labor export company SONA to stop harassing the victim’s witnesses

– Compensate the victims for physical, psychological and emotional damages

Winbond was given until Thursday, December 11 to respond.
