Key Briefs & Reports: Vietnamese Embassy, PTA Boost Pressure on Workers

August 20, 2008: In the latest development in the Polar Twin Advance case, the Vietnamese embassy in Malaysia is reportedly asking the company to continue withholding the workers’ passports while representatives of the two Vietnamese labor export firms involved pressure the workers to sign a statement limiting their rights and options.

Specifically, the statement asserts that the workers “voluntarily” quit their jobs and are going home, and that, as a condition for their return to Vietnam, they will not make any claims against the companies. Eight workers have signed the statement under pressures – financial and otherwise – that clearly indicate they are acting under duress.
